Cultural notes

Arriving in Cambodia, whether stepping off a plane at Phnom Penh International Airport or crossing a dusty land border from Thailand or Vietnam, involves navigating the country's specific immigration procedures. Unlike many travel destinations where Westerners enjoy visa-free entry, almost all nationalities require a visa to enter Cambodia. You generally have two options: applying for an E-Visa beforehand or obtaining a Visa on Arrival — Tethakar pel mok dol (ទិដ្ឋាការពេលមកដល់). Culturally, the Visa on Arrival process is highly bureaucratic but straightforward, provided you are prepared. You must bring crisp, pristine US dollars to pay the fee; Cambodian immigration officials will routinely reject bills that are torn, overly wrinkled, or marked with ink. You will also be asked about the purpose of your visit: "What is the purpose of your visit?" — Tae neak mok ti nih knong kol bomnong avei? (តើអ្នកមកទីនេះក្នុងគោលបំណងអ្វី?). Simply answering "I am here for tourism" — Khnom mok ti nih daembei daeu leng (ខ្ញុំមកទីនេះដើម្បីដើរលេង) is usually sufficient. At land border crossings, it is not uncommon for officials or "helpers" to subtly ask for a small tip or an inflated fee to process your passport faster. While frustrating, it is part of the local ecosystem. Staying calm, smiling, and speaking a few words of Khmer can drastically alter the immigration officer's attitude. Demonstrating basic respect in their language often ensures a much smoother and faster entry into the Kingdom of Wonder.
