Unlike the formal 24-hour military clock often used in Western train stations or airports, Cambodians navigate their daily lives using a strict 12-hour system heavily reliant on the specific part of the day. To be understood clearly, you cannot simply say "at three." You must specify the time frame using words like Preuk (ព្រឹក) for the morning, Roseal (រសៀល) for the afternoon, or Yup (យប់) for the evening. Therefore, 3:00 PM is expressed as "hour three afternoon" — Maong bei roseal (ម៉ោងបីរសៀល), and 8:00 PM becomes "hour eight night" — Maong pram bei yup (ម៉ោងប្រាំបីយប់). Punctuality in Cambodia can sometimes be fluid—often humorously referred to as "Asian time"—but when booking a bus to Siem Reap or arranging a meeting with a tuk-tuk driver, getting the time of day correct is vital. Mixing up your "morning" and "evening" can easily result in you missing your transport entirely! Learning these temporal markers not only keeps your itinerary intact but also proves that you have adapted to the local rhythm and mindset of Southeast Asia.
