Navigating airports in Thailand begins with knowing which of Bangkok’s two major hubs you are flying out of, as confusing them is a common and costly tourist mistake. The main international gateway is Suvarnabhumi Airport (สนามบินสุวรรณภูมิ - sanam bin suwannaphum), a massive, modern architectural marvel. The older hub, Don Mueang Airport (สนามบินดอนเมือง - sanam bin don mueang), primarily services domestic routes and low-cost carriers (LCCs) like AirAsia. When you arrive, the first major hurdle is Immigration, which Thais abbreviate as ตม. (To-Mo), short for 'Truat Khon Khao Mueang'. The lines at To-Mo can be notoriously long, so bringing a lot of "jai yen" (patience) is essential. Once you clear customs—ศุลกากร (sunlakakon)—and pick up your luggage, you will enter the arrival hall, where you will be swarmed by unofficial taxi touts offering flat rates. The golden rule is to completely ignore them. Instead, follow the signs to the official public taxi queue (คิวแท็กซี่ - khiu thaek-si). Here, you will line up at an automated kiosk, press a button, and receive a paper ticket with your designated parking bay number. The driver there will use the meter, though a mandatory airport surcharge of 50 baht is added to the final fare. If you are catching a domestic flight, you are a ผู้โดยสาร (phu doi san - passenger) flying เที่ยวบินในประเทศ (thiaw bin nai prathet). Ensure your bags are not overweight (น้ำหนักเกิน - nam nak koen), as Thai low-cost carriers are extremely strict about cabin baggage limits. Knowing the names of the airports, the crucial "To-Mo" abbreviation, and the mechanics of the official taxi queue will ensure your arrival in the Land of Smiles is stress-free and scam-free from minute one.
