Falling ill abroad is always stressful, but Thailand boasts some of the best private healthcare facilities in the world, making it a global hub for medical tourism. If you need to see a doctor, you say ต้องการพบหมอ (tong-kan phop mo - "I need to see a doctor"). When you go to an international hospital, or โรงพยาบาลนานาชาติ (rong-phayaban nana-chat), you will likely be shocked by the lobby, which often resembles a luxury 5-star hotel, complete with grand pianos and coffee shops. Unlike the long waiting times often experienced in Western public health systems, service here is incredibly fast. However, it is fundamentally a private, for-profit business. Therefore, the very first question the reception will ask you is whether you have travel insurance: มีประกันการเดินทางไหม (mi pra-kan doen-thang mai). Handing over your insurance card (นี่บัตรประกัน - ni bat pra-kan) is essential, as medical costs in these premium facilities can be astronomical. If you are paying out of pocket, you might want to ask about the consultation fee upfront: ค่าตรวจเท่าไหร่ (kha truat thao-rai). Because these hospitals cater to foreigners, they offer free translation services. You can easily ask ขอล่ามภาษาอังกฤษได้ไหม (kho lam phasa ang-krit dai mai - "Can I get an English interpreter?"). The doctor will ask about your symptoms, so be prepared to explain your condition. If the situation is serious, you might need to be admitted, which Thais refer to using the English loanword "admit": ต้องแอดมิทไหม (tong aet-mit mai - "Do I need to be admitted?"). Before you leave, do not forget to ask for a medical certificate, ขอใบรับรองแพทย์ด้วย (kho bai rap-rong phaet duai), and a detailed receipt. You will absolutely need these to say เคลมประกันได้ไหม (khlem pra-kan dai mai - "Can I claim this with my insurance?") once you return home.
