Thai hospitality is world-renowned, and when staying at a hotel or guesthouse, you will be treated with immense respect. However, making the most of hotel services requires knowing how to ask politely. When calling the reception for room service or housekeeping, always start with a polite greeting. If you need your room cleaned, you can ask ช่วยทำความสะอาดห้องหน่อยครับ/ค่ะ (chuai tham-khwam-sa-at hong noi khrap/kha - 'Please clean the room'). A major cultural difference for many tourists is the tipping etiquette for housekeeping. While a service charge might be included in your bill, it is customary and highly appreciated to leave a small tip of 20 to 50 baht on the pillow or bedside table for the maid each morning. If you need extra amenities, the magic formula is ขอ...เพิ่ม (kho... phoem - 'may I have more...'). For example, in the extreme tropical heat, taking multiple showers a day is common, so you might frequently need extra towels. You can ask ขอผ้าเช็ดตัวเพิ่ม (kho pha-chet-tua phoem). For families or groups traveling together, hotel rooms in Thailand are generally quite spacious, and adding an extra bed is a very standard request. You simply ask ขอเตียงเสริม (kho tiang soem), though be aware this usually comes with an additional nightly fee. You might also need to ask for more toilet paper. Interestingly, Thais use the English loanword 'tissue' for both facial tissues and toilet paper, so you ask for ขอกระดาษทิชชู่เพิ่ม (kho kradat thit-chu phoem). If you want to use the hotel's laundry service to wash your sweaty tropical clothes, ask มีบริการซักรีดไหม (mi borikan sak-rit mai). By combining these specific requests with the classic Thai smile and the polite ending particles (khrap/kha), the hotel staff will go above and beyond to ensure your stay is incredibly comfortable.
