Staying connected in Thailand is incredibly cheap and boasts some of the fastest 5G networks in the world, but acquiring a local number comes with strict legal protocols. Whether you buy a SIM card at the airport upon arrival or at a local telecommunications shop (like AIS, True, or Dtac), the very first requirement is your physical passport. Thai law mandates that all phone numbers be registered to an individual’s identity, so you will hear the staff say ใช้พาสปอร์ตลงทะเบียน (chai phat-sa-pot long-tha-bian - "Need a passport to register"). For short-term visitors, the most convenient option is to ask for a ซิมทัวริสต์ (sim thua-rit - "tourist SIM"), which comes pre-loaded with data for 8, 15, or 30 days. If you are staying longer, you can opt for a standard prepaid SIM. Thai prepaid plans are brilliantly flexible and largely driven by mobile data rather than voice calls. You can ask for a package with unlimited data by saying อินเทอร์เน็ตไม่อั้น (in-thoe-net mai an - "Unlimited internet"). The concept of "topping up" your credit is a daily routine in Thailand, referred to as เติมเงิน (toem ngoen - literally "add money"). You can top up your phone at any 7-Eleven, via banking apps, or using the bright orange automated kiosks found on many street corners. Just say อยากเติมเงินโทรศัพท์ (yak toem ngoen tho-ra-sap - "I want to top up my phone"). If you are not using an unlimited plan, it is wise to occasionally check your remaining balance so you don't run out of data while navigating with Google Maps. You can ask a local or the shop staff เช็คยอดเงินยังไง (chek yot ngoen yang-ngai - "How can I check my balance?"). Embracing the prepaid "toem ngoen" culture gives you ultimate freedom without being tied to a rigid monthly contract.
