Navigating the Thai immigration system is an inevitable rite of passage for expats and long-term travelers. The Thai Immigration Bureau is universally referred to by locals and foreigners alike as ตม. (To-Mo), short for "Truat Khon Khao Mueang." Whether you need to extend your tourist stay (อยากต่อวีซ่า - yak to wi-sa) or fulfill the mandatory requirement for long-term visa holders to report their address, known as the 90-day report (มารายงานตัวเก้าสิบวัน - ma rai-ngan tua kao-sip wan), preparation is key. Bureaucracy in Thailand relies heavily on physical paperwork. When asked ต้องใช้เอกสารอะไรบ้าง (tong chai ek-ka-san arai bang - "What documents are needed?"), you must almost always provide a passport copy: สำเนาพาสปอร์ต (sam-nao phat-sa-pot). A crucial cultural rule when submitting copies in Thailand is that you must sign every single page with blue ink to certify it as a true copy. Overstaying your visa is treated as a serious offense; if your visa expires (วีซ่าจะหมดอายุ - wi-sa cha mot a-yu), you will face an overstay fine, ค่าปรับโอเวอร์สเตย์ (kha-prap o-woe-sa-te), calculated at 500 baht per day, and risk deportation or a ban from re-entering the country. Another critical rule when visiting the To-Mo office or any government building in Thailand is the strict dress code. You must dress politely (ต้องแต่งตัวสุภาพ - tong taeng-tua su-phap): this means no shorts, no tank tops, and closed-toe shoes. You can literally be turned away at the door for wearing flip-flops. Once inside, take a queue number (รับบัตรคิว - rap bat khiu) and arm yourself with "jai yen" (a cool, patient heart). Dealing with Thai bureaucracy is a test of patience, but showing respect, smiling, and having your signed blue-ink documents ready will make the process infinitely smoother.
