Shopping for clothes in Thailand, from the air-conditioned mega-malls of Siam to the labyrinthine alleys of the Chatuchak Weekend Market, is a national pastime. However, for Western travelers, it can sometimes be an exercise in humility due to the significant disparity in clothing sizes. Thai body types are generally more petite than Western ones. A size "Large" in Thailand might equate to a "Small" or "Medium" in North America or Europe. It is not uncommon to hear a vendor politely but bluntly tell you, ไม่มีไซส์ (mai mi sai), meaning "We have no size for you," or say that an item is เล็กเกินไป (lek koen pai - "too small") for you. Do not take this personally; Thais are very direct about physical appearances, and it is meant as a matter-of-fact observation, not an insult! To ask for a bigger size, you can say มีไซส์ใหญ่กว่านี้ไหม (mi sai yai kwa ni mai - "Do you have a bigger size?"). Before buying, it is always a good idea to ask if you can try it on by saying ลองได้ไหม (long dai mai - "Can I try it?"). In modern shopping malls, you will find comfortable fitting rooms (ห้องลองเสื้อ - hong long suea). However, if you are shopping at a night market, fitting rooms rarely exist. Vendors might offer you a sarong to slip over your clothes to try things on, or you just have to hold the garment up against your body and guess. Once you find the perfect fit, you can finalize the deal by saying เอาตัวนี้ (ao tua ni - "I will take this one"). Understanding the size differences and navigating the fitting process with a smile and a "Jai Yen" attitude will make your Thai shopping spree incredibly rewarding.
