Dealing with the police in a foreign country can be intimidating, but Thailand has established a specific branch to make this easier: the Tourist Police, reachable nationwide by dialing 1155. While the regular police station is called สถานีตำรวจ (sathani tam-ruat), the Tourist Police (ตำรวจท่องเที่ยว - tam-ruat thong-thiao) are specially trained to assist foreigners, often speaking excellent English and standing ready to mediate disputes, deal with aggressive taxi drivers, or help with stolen items. If you become a victim of a crime, you must go to the police station to file a formal report, known as แจ้งความ (chaeng-khwam). The most common reason tourists need to do this is because they have lost their passport or had a bag stolen. You would state โดนขโมยกระเป๋า (don kha-moi kra-pao - "My bag was stolen"). The primary motivation for filing this police report—ใบแจ้งความ (bai chaeng-khwam)—is administrative. Your embassy will absolutely require this piece of paper to issue a new passport, and your travel insurance company at home will demand it to process any financial claims for stolen electronics or cash. When giving your statement, the police will ask you เกิดขึ้นที่ไหน (koet-khuen thi nai - "Where did it happen?") and เกิดขึ้นเมื่อไหร่ (koet-khuen muea-rai - "When did it happen?"). If you are dealing with a local dispute, such as a scooter rental scam where the owner is demanding exorbitant fees for a tiny scratch, involving the Tourist Police is the smartest move. Never argue aggressively or raise your voice at a Thai police officer, as this shows extreme disrespect for authority and will instantly work against you. Maintain a calm, respectful demeanor, dress politely, and let the 1155 bilingual officers resolve the situation fairly.
