Navigating dietary restrictions in Laos can be challenging because the Western concepts of veganism or strict vegetarianism are not traditionally ingrained in the daily culture. However, thanks to Buddhism, there is a widely understood concept called "Jay" or "Je." If you say "I am a vegan/vegetarian" using the phrase ຂ້ອຍກິນເຈ (khoi kin che), locals will instantly understand that you consume absolutely no animal products, including meat, eggs, and dairy. If you just want to say "no meat, please," you can use ບໍ່ໃສ່ຊີ້ນ (bo sai sin). But be extremely careful: in Laos, even seemingly innocent vegetable dishes or papaya salads are heavily seasoned with pungent fish sauce (nam pa) or fermented fish paste (padek), which are invisible to the eye but very much animal products. You must explicitly request your food without them. For travelers with severe food allergies, vigilance is required. Peanuts are frequently sprinkled on top of stir-fries and salads. If you are allergic to peanuts, you must emphasize ຂ້ອຍແພ້ຖົ່ວດິນ (khoi phae thua din - I am allergic to peanuts). Similarly, if you are allergic to seafood (ຂ້ອຍແພ້ອາຫານທະເລ - khoi phae ahan tha le), clearly state this before ordering. Dairy allergies are generally easier to manage because traditional Lao food does not use milk, butter, or cheese. However, be cautious with iced coffees and fruit shakes, which are often drowned in sweetened condensed milk. Saying ບໍ່ໃສ່ນົມ (bo sai nom - no milk) will save you from a lactose issue. Always communicate your restrictions with a warm smile. Lao cooks are incredibly accommodating and will happily customize a dish, finding alternatives (ມີແນວອື່ນແທນບໍ່? - mi naew uen thaen bo?) to ensure you enjoy a safe and delicious meal.
