One of the most common challenges for Western travelers exploring the vibrant street food scenes of Laos is dealing with gastric issues, commonly known as "traveler's diarrhea" or food poisoning. While the food is incredibly delicious, your stomach might not be accustomed to the local bacteria, spice levels, or the use of fermented fish pastes. If disaster strikes, knowing how to express your discomfort is critical. You will want to say ຂ້ອຍເຈັບທ້ອງ (khoi chep thong - I have a stomachache) or, more specifically, ຂ້ອຍຖອກທ້ອງ (khoi thok thong - I have diarrhea). If you suspect the spicy papaya salad from the night market was the culprit, you can explain that you have food poisoning by stating ອາຫານເປັນພິດ (ahan pen phit). In cases of severe nausea, telling a pharmacist ຂ້ອຍຢາກຮາກ (khoi yak hak - I want to vomit) will ensure they provide the right anti-nausea medication. Another severe risk in Southeast Asia that travelers often underestimate is the brutal tropical sun. Dehydration (ຂ້ອຍຂາດນໍ້າ - khoi khat nam) and heatstroke (ຂ້ອຍເປັນລົມແດດ - khoi pen lom daet) can creep up on you very quickly during long temple tours or motorbike rides. If you feel faint and mention that you are so hot you feel dizzy (ຮ້ອນຫຼາຍຈົນວິນຫົວ - hon lai chon vin hua), locals will immediately direct you to a shaded, cool area. The absolute best remedy for both heavy diarrhea and heat-related exhaustion is replacing lost salts. You should immediately head to a pharmacy or minimart and ask for ຂໍນໍ້າເກືອແຮ່ແດ່ (kho nam kua hae dae - electrolyte powder, please). Mixing these brightly colored packets with bottled water is a life-saver, keeping you safe and allowing you to recover rapidly to enjoy the rest of your holiday.
