While Uber operates here, the ultimate local champion is an app called "PickMe." Downloading PickMe is a game-changer; it allows you to book air-conditioned cars, minivans, and even tuk-tuks at fair, digitally metered rates, completely removing the stress of haggling after a long, exhausting flight. When traveling from the airport to the capital city of Colombo or heading south towards the beaches of Galle, your driver will ask whether you prefer the normal coastal road or the expressway. You should absolutely say "Highway eken yanna" (හයිවේ එකෙන් යන්න - hajiweː eken janna), which means "Take the highway." The normal roads are notoriously congested and can add tedious hours to your journey. Keep a crucial cultural and practical detail in mind: highway tolls are typically paid in cash at the tollgate by the passenger, not the driver. Therefore, having a few smaller local rupee notes ready upon arrival is vital. If you are catching a departing flight to leave the island, always account for Sri Lanka's unpredictable traffic. Telling your driver "Mata hadisiy" (මට හදිසියි - maʈa hadisiji), meaning "I am in a hurry," might encourage them to navigate a bit faster, but booking your PickMe well in advance is the safest and least stressful strategy.
