Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, produces some of the world's finest tea. Drinking tea is a national pastime, but the local way of preparing it might surprise you. If you order "Kiri te" (කිරි තේ - kiri teː), meaning milk tea, be prepared for a profoundly sweet, creamy beverage brewed with condensed milk and generous heaps of sugar. To save your teeth and tailor it to Western tastes, you must absolutely learn the phrase "Sini aduwen" (සීනි අඩුවෙන් - siːni aɖuwen), which means "with less sugar." For a simple black tea, ask for a "Plain tea" (ප්ලේන්ටී - pleːnṭiː). Beyond tea, the ultimate tropical thirst-quencher is the "Thambili" (තැඹිලි - tæmᵇbili), or King Coconut. These bright orange coconuts are indigenous to the island and are sold on almost every street corner. The vendor will expertly chop off the top with a machete and hand it to you with a straw. It is nature's own energy drink, packed with electrolytes, and perfect for beating the intense midday heat. In the evenings, when unwinding at a beachside Kade, you might want to try the local brew. Simply ask "Sitala biyar tiyenawada?" (සීතල බියර් තියෙනවද? - siːθala bijar θijenawada?), meaning "Do you have cold beer?". The most famous local brand is Lion Lager, a crisp and refreshing beer that pairs perfectly with a spicy deviled dish. Knowing how to order these three iconic drinks in Sinhala will vastly enhance your culinary journey on the island.
