(ඔයාට ෆේස්බුක් තියෙනවද? - ojaːʈa feːsbuk θijenawada?) or "Oyaata WhatsApp thiyenawada?" meaning "Do you have Facebook/WhatsApp?". In Western cultures, sharing social media or phone numbers is often reserved for close acquaintances, but in Sri Lanka, it is the standard, joyful way of solidifying a new friendship. If you are happy to connect, you can reply, "Api katha karamu" (අපි කතා කරමු - api kaθaː karamu), which means "Let's talk" or "Let's keep in touch." Another ubiquitous aspect of modern Sri Lankan socializing is the selfie. Capturing the moment is vital to locals. You will frequently hear the cheerful request, "Api selfie ekak gamu" (අපි සෙල්ෆියක් ගමු - api selfijak gamu), meaning "Let's take a selfie." Obliging with a wide smile will earn you immense goodwill. If you want to impress them further and deepen the conversation, you can ask them about their daily life: "Oya vinodeta monawada karanne?" (ඔයා විනෝදෙට මොනවද කරන්නේ? - ojaː winoːdeʈa monawada karanneː?), meaning "What do you do for fun?". Sharing these small, tech-savvy, and deeply social micro-interactions bridges the gap between tourist and local.
